woc12 training vevey1kThe week before the World Cup final in La Chaux-de-Fonds some orienteering national teams used the opportunity for training races in Switzerland.

At the sprint training in Vevey two world champions took part: sprint gold medal winner Daniel Hubmann (SUI) and the relay champion Minna Kauppi (FIN).

Daniel Hubmann is the current leader in the men's world cup standing and he has the chance to win the world cup overall ranking for the fourth time in a row. As the final race will also be a city sprint Hubmann wanted to do a last training on high competition pace. "I did not run with a sprint map for the last two weeks. Therefore this training was a good option", Hubmann said. He ran the the 3,8 km course in Vevey like an intervall training, dividing it into three parts for a run on high speed and with some sections in between with relaxed pace.

Therefore Hubmann was finally not the fastest athlete. The British runner Scott Fraser, 9th in the sprint at the world championships, won in 17:02, 46 seconds ahead of his teammate Graham Gristwood (4th at the world championships). With athletes from Great Britain, Portugal, Finland and Poland there was kind of international orienteering atmosphere in the old town of Vevey and on the shores of Lake Geneva.

A total of 90 athletes took part at this race organised by the club CARE Vevey Orientation. It was one of the trainings offered by the organisation of the World Orienteering Championships 2012 in Lausanne.
